Michael Phelps to retire after winning 23rd Olympic Gold

This was the cherry on top of the cake I wanted. Phelps’ performance helped the United States men’s team to emerge as winners in the 4×100 medley relay at Rio.

This is goodbye for Michael Phelps.

Speaking of comebacks, Phelps insists he won’t be coming out of retirement again to take on Tokyo in 2020.

While there are unknowns ahead, Phelps is confident he is bowing out at the right time.

“I’m glad I did it”, King said of speaking out against Russia’s state-sponsored doping machine after helping to lead the United States to victory in the women’s 4×100-meter medley relay, which happened to be the nation’s historic 1,000th Olympic gold medal. However, the American swimmer came limelight after winning 6 Gold and 2 Bronze medal.

“When I went down, I thought, ‘Oh my God, that is it.’ I just got up and wanted to stick with the guys and stay strong”, Farah said.

But Adam Peaty, who twice broke the 100m breaststroke world record en route to gold in Rio, got past American Cody Miller on the second leg, pulling Great Britain from sixth to first.

“I mean 1,000 gold for the United States of America is a nice number”. She almost won another gold medal just an hour earlier, as she was only 0.02 seconds off of the gold medal in the 50 meter freestyle; she took the silver in that event.

Former British swimmer Karen Pickering on BBC One: “We’ve run out of words to describe what Michael Phelps has done”. Two years later, he was back in the picture with the objective of competing, of retaking his passion, but most of all, of enjoying the Olympics feelings.

Comfortably the most decorated Olympian is history, Phelps took his record-breaking tally of medals to 28 at Rio 2016 – including 23 golds – by topping the podium on five occasions and taking silver in the 100-meter butterfly.

The U.S. also won 33 medals at Sydney in 2000.

The U.S. team had arrived in Rio with 977 gold medals, according to Olympstats.com, and had sat on 998 for much of Saturday until long jumper Jeff Henderson put them on the brink with his victory.

The U.S. has won every men’s 4x100m freestyle relay that they have contested, dating back to the event’s debut in 1960. Puerto Rico, a territory of the USA, has fielded teams in the Summer Olympics since 1948, and this was the first medal, of any variety, for a woman representing Puerto Rico.

“It’s incredible. Really. I have been dreaming of this moment since I was a child and it’s awesome”, the 21-year-old said.

“It’s really special and the fact that I can do it with a relay is incredible”, she said after the US women beat Australia and Denmark.

“Last warm-up, last time putting on a suit, last time walking out in front of people, representing my country – it’s insane, a lot better than it was four years ago”.
