Red Sox manager John Farrell announces he has cancer

When he starts out by telling us that, your heart just stops.

Everyone loved Farrell in 2013.

But the last two seasons have ranged from disappointing to dispiriting.

In return for easing the Padres payroll burden, the Red Sox would acquire a starting pitcher who they hope would rebound to his numbers of 2011 through 2014, providing at least some sort of an anchor to their disastrous starting rotation, which ranks 28th in Major League Baseball in terms of ERA.

However, the 28-year-old Cuban was forced from the game after his fourth-inning at-bat after fouling a ball off his left foot with what the Red Sox public relations staff is calling a contusion. He’s managing 25 guys’ lives, not just baseball.

We wish him the best of luck in his recovery. “So it’s been a shocker”, Farrell said.

The Red Sox have had a ton of problems this season. Even closer to home, Farrell’s youngest son, Luke, survived two surgeries to remove what turned out to be a benign tumor from his neck before going off to college in 2009. Farrell is optimistic about the treatment. Now the plan is for Farrell to go through nine weeks of chemo, which would finish in mid-October if everything goes well.

“It’s localized”, he told reporters as he announced he would relinquish control of the team for the remainder of the season.

It was reported that Farrell recently underwent a procedure for a hernia but whether the cancer was discovered then is unclear at this time.

Farrell has managed the Red Sox since 2013, leading the team to a World Series title that year.

The game could only do so much to take Lovullo’s mind off Farrell.

David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia have stepped up for John Farrell in plenty of key moments.

Davis, a lifetime. 274 hitter who starred with teams like the Giants, Twins and Angels in his playing days, said of his students, “They are special kids and we want to give them some special things to have fun with. We’ve got to get him better”.
