Chad Green turns in another solid outing, holding the Angels to one run over six innings but takes the hard-luck loss. He has now thrown out four of six runners trying to swipe a bag-not too shabby.

But Andrelton Simmons’ first-inning RBI single held up as the decisive run as the Angels avoided being swept by the Yankees in the season series for the first time ever.

Pujols slides into home plate safely to score the Angels’ first run of the game.. Aggressive base-running by allowed him to score from second base on Simmons’ first single. Starlin Castro and Aaron Hicks each had two hits but the Yankees left eight runners on base. The Angels took a 1-0 lead in the first inning against right-hander Chad Green, who was making his first start since pitching six shutout innings, amassing 11 strikeouts, conceding two hits and issuing no walks August 15.Pujols lofted a single into center field with two out, moved to second base when C.J. Cron walked and scored when Andrelton Simmons bounced a single past diving shortstop Didi Gregorius. He ended up with 5 ⁄3 scoreless against the Yankees, and the no-name bullpen of Deolis Guerra, JC Ramirez, and Fernando Salas combined to no-hit them over the final 10 outs.

“Something that’s lost in everything is Albert going first to third in the eighth inning, ” Scioscia said. Mark Teixeira began the inning with a double off the base of the center-field wall, then took third when Hicks lined a one-out single into center field. After the Yankees put two on with one out in the eighth, Ramirez struck out Didi Gregorius and retired Castro on a groundout. “We weren’t able to do that today”.

Angels: RHP Huston Street has gone to Texas to seek a second opinion on his injured right knee in Texas and may need offseason surgery.

Yankees: RHP Michael Pineda (6-10) will pitch on an extra day of rest Monday when the Yankees open a series at Seattle, his former team. Green was also excellent last Monday, striking out 11 batters over six scoreless innings against the Blue Jays, and looks poised to finish strong in his new (ish) starting role.

Angels: LHP Tyler Skaggs (1-2) starts Tuesday when the Angels open a three-game series at Toronto.

Three of Green’s first four starts did not go well, but the work he did in the minors earlier this month is paying off for the 25-year-old righthander as he’s allowed one run over his past 12 innings.
