Ennis-Hill in third after two events of Olympic heptathlon

It looks like being the final act of a glorious career for one of the finest athletes Great Britain has produced. “It makes it a harder decision knowing the world championships are in London next year”. I kind of know, but I am not 100 per cent sure. “I want to be the best at what I do”, said Ennis-Hill who hailed new champion Thiam. I don’t want to be that.

“It’s hard as you want to end at the very top”, she said.

Victory would also make the 33-year-old Britain’s most successful track Olympian, with three gold medals unprecedented in his home nation. It’s like, ‘Have you still got stuff in the basement?’ If I do decide to stop, it will be sad to see that go on without me.

She has previously represented Wales at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games, winning silver in the points race and bronze in the scratch. “It’s celebrations not commiserations, ‘ she said”.

But Ennis-Hill called Friday a “mixed day”, expressing disappointment in her shot put and 200m performances. “I should have done better but I’ll go back now”.

Ennis-Hill was undoubtedly the poster girl for the London 2012 Olympic Games and she lived up to the hype by blowing her competitors out of the water and taking hole Gold.

“These two days have been really tough but I’m really proud”.

On her future plans, she said: “I still want to be active and keep fit and be involved in sport in some element and get people active and inspire them”.

Cyclist Laura Trott takes to the velodrome at 3:34pm in the women’s team pursuit alongside Ciara Horne, Elinor Barker, Katie Archibald and Joanna Rowsell-Shand.

“I’m pretty emotional but these are happy tears”, she said.

Then it was the long jump that let her down.

The 23-year-old from Liverpool should be the face of the 2017 world championships and one of the favourites for gold in Tokyo in 2020 Tokyo. Ennis-Hill delivering on the biggest stage yet again.

It left Ennis-Hill with a stark equation, needing to beat her unheralded rival by 9.47 seconds in the 800 metres if she was to retain her title. Katarina Johnston-Thompson finished in sixth place with 6523 points.

That gave the Belgian a score of 6,810 points – a personal best by 302 – with Ennis-Hill second in 6,775 and the Canadian Brianne Theisen-Eaton third with 6,653 points. Even three days ago the bookies thought she was a long shot, at 50-1, for gold. We always said it was going to take 6,800 to win and it did – 6,810, so I feel like I was capable of it but there’s nothing I can do.
