Romo, Prescott Lead Dallas Win; Dolphins Move With Tannehill

Quarterbacks selected in later rounds can normally get away with a few bad performances, not the first pick.

“I’ll tell you this, man, rookie is just a name they give you in the league”.

McCown is a reliable quarterback, but never seemed to have what it takes to be a permanent starter in the NFL. “We had a lot of energy”.

That certainly has not been the case through the Rams’ first two preseason games, but the addition of Gaines to the first unit could mark a turning point toward that goal. He has a good arm and knows where to go with the ball. He had a nice deep touchdown pass to Dez Bryant, the second time in two weeks he has hit Bryant for a score.

The quarterback and No. 1 overall pick struggled through many stretches of the Rams’ 21-20 win over the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, but he settled down to find some rhythm late in the game.

Tony Romo takes back the role of starting quarterback job the Dallas Cowboys tonight, August 19, at 7 p.m. against the Miami Dolphins. On one possession, top cornerback Trumaine Johnson got beat downfield by Chris Conley for a 37-yard pass play and Jeremy Maclin easily caught a 20-yard touchdown pass across the middle, with Lamarcus Joyner seemingly getting mixed up in coverage. On his first touchdown he showed his downfield accuracy to throw to the outside shoulder where only his receiver would get it.

The Chiefs plan to play their starters for the first two quarters on Saturday while the Rams say running back Todd Gurley, who rushed for 1,106 yards and 10 touchdowns in his rookie year last season, will make his pre-season debut. They also panicked the Cowboys lost their backup quarterback to an injury. Prescott had some pre-draft issues that teams might have been concerned about, though the on-field ability was there.

Dallas coaches and players, such as Witten, were glad to see Romo back on the field. He had a bit of a shaky start to the game after tripping on his own teammate and fumbling, but he rallied back by playing smart football.

It could be a mirage. While folks are blowing off the preseason, for Cowboy fans this emergence of Dak Prescott is more than a guy who is hot in the preseason, it’s the changing of the guard. Teams keep it simple on both sides of the ball in the preseason.

He did have moments where his talent was on display such as his deep bomb to receiver Pharoh Cooper which was dropped, but the night belonged to Prescott. Now, many people close to the team feel that this is the person who can drag the Cowboys out of the dirt if Tony Romo gets hurt. But the signs are great so far.

“I don’t really pay attention to that, but it’s pretty cool, I guess”, Prescott said of his ideal 158.3 quarterback rating Friday night.

Prescott had an overthrow for what would have been his first interception in the second quarter, but it was wiped out by a roughing-the-passer penalty against Andre Branch. Another pass over the middle was nearly intercepted, but dropped. The third preseason game may be make-or-break for the former Appalachian State star.
