A level two alert has been issued for London and the South East – meaning there is a 60% chance the maximum threshold temperatures of 32C and 31C respectively could be met.
Newbury is set to swelter in baking hot temperatures this week as the Met Office issues a level 2 heatwave warning for the whole of the south east.
Caused by “warm air pushing up from the continent”, the alerts cover from 12pm on Tuesday – where temperatures hit 29.7C in St James Park and 30C in Gravesend, Kent – to 9am on Friday.
Public Health England urged people to be aware of the health risks of heat.
“But for some people, such as older people, those with underlying health conditions and those with young children, summer heat can bring real health risks”.
Health experts have warned people to take extra care over the next few days as thermometers rocket.
Dr Waite added: “We know it’s still the school holidays for many and with a number of high profile events planned for this weekend it’s really important people in the affected areas keep in mind that the coming days may feel hot, so stay hydrated look out for others and keep an eye on forecasts”.
Netweather forecaster Jo Farrow said: “Wednesday looks fine and sunny for many”.
Londoners have basked in glorious sunshine today with the mini heatwave expected to last until at least Friday.
“Thursday has the potential to be even hotter, but it depends on when a thundery plume moves up over England and Wales”.
The statement says: “There is now high confidence that temperatures are increasing today (Tuesday August 23) with the highest temperatures across eastern parts of England”.
The sizzling forecast has sparked a surge of bets on records for hot weather tumbling.

“Now the heatwave has arrived, people will likely be out and about more enjoying the summer sun”.
