Pennsylvania’s embattled attorney general is stepping down after perjury conviction
“I don’t believe judges are lenient when it comes to public officials that have violated the public trust”, said Lemoyne attorney William Costopoulos.

Attempts to reach Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele for this report were not successful.
On Tuesday, Wolf called Kane’s situation “unfortunate”. She won more votes in Pennsylvania that year than President Obama.
“That would be for a judge to decide”.
There was also this moment last August: Kane’s sister, who was dressed in the black – you can see there – walked in front of the actual attorney general, who came into court wearing a red dress to fake out photographers. “It’s a serious charge”, said Rep. Tedd Nesbit, R-Mercer County. That law was eventually overturned by a federal court. Without offering specifics, Shargel said he planned to stay by Kane’s side and fight to the end.
“I liked her, I thought she could go places”, he said.
But Babnew said Tuesday’s announcement was belated.
Kane, who has lost her law license, is not running for reelection. She became the second attorney general to resign in disgrace since voters first elected an officeholder in 1980; Ernie Preate in 1995 was the first.
Shortly after taking office, Kane shut down a case built around a sting operation in which an undercover informant bribed state lawmakers.
In one 2014 case, for example, Demchick-Alloy got notice for sentencing a white man who waved a noose at a black man to visit the African-American Museum in Philadelphia as part of his punishment for disorderly conduct. He left the District Attorney’s office in June.
Prosecutors said Kane masterminded the leak and a subsequent coverup – and then lied to a grand jury about it.
Kane has argued that the allegations against her were part of a high-stakes political feud involving charges that past prosecutors had mishandled the Jerry Sandusky molestation case.
Kane asserted that she’d approved the release of some information about the case but let underlings determine what to turn over to a Philadelphia newspaper reporter.
According to Kane, a campaign of “political retribution had been launched” at her – the leak accusations were just another string of lies being spawn against her by enemies.
Two candidates who are running for the attorney general post this year both reiterated their calls for Kane’s resignation immediately after the verdict and used it to boost their candidacies.
Kane’s resignation abruptly ends a tumultuous term.
Democrat Kathleen Kane’s exit completes a spectacular fall for the former county prosecutor who soared to victory four years ago as an outsider promising to break up an “old-boys’ network” in state government.
The same prosecutors involved in the Philadelphia investigations oversaw the Sandusky case.
The “Porngate” scandal resulted in the early retirements of former Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justices Seamus McCaffery and Michael Eakin, as well as reprimands for dozens of state employees. “I am hopeful that they can now refocus on the important tasks of combatting the drug epidemic, protecting children and enforcing the law of the commonwealth”.
However, a judge ruled Kane could not raise the pornographic email defense at trial.
