At least 6 homes destroyed in Washington fire

A wildfire in San Luis Obispo County that has neared the Hearst Castle where newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst once lived was also threatening a Monterey County community Sunday, a fire spokesman said.

A fire in Grand Teton park made a 5-mile run Monday, forcing the closure of a 10-mile stretch of road that leads into Yellowstone’s South Entrance. The fire is burning about two miles from the Hearst Castle, which is a National Historic Landmark and California Historical Landmark.

In the Santa Ynez Mountains above Santa Barbara, a wildfire expanded to almost 37 square miles as it chewed through critically dry brush, grass and oak canopies.

The fire started Saturday at southwest of Lake Nacimiento in the Running Deer Ranch area.

The blaze has burned about 35 square miles of a mostly remote forest.

Firefighters are continuing to make progress against a massive Southern California wildfire that destroyed at least 105 homes. Several other nearby communities have been under evacuation orders for days.

Meanwhile, a 58-square-mile fire that destroyed 105 homes in Southern California is nearly entirely contained and all evacuation orders have been lifted.

A wind shift caused the fire to cross a containment line in the afternoon, leading authorities to issue evacuation orders for several communities north and west of Lake Nacimiento, about 180 miles northwest of Los Angeles, said California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection spokesman Mike Yuli.

One blaze west of the eastern Washington city had destroyed at least six homes and scorched more than 9 square miles by Monday morning, the Department of Natural Resources said.

Historic Hearst Castle, a major tourist attraction on California’s central coast, will be closed to the public through the week as a safety precaution due to a wildfire in the area that has destroyed more than 30 homes.

Hundreds of homes including the iconic Hearst Castle State Park in San Simeon remain threatened by the Chimney Fire burning in northern San Luis Obispo County. The town also lost power, making the battle by firefighters more hard.

Another wildfire, south of Spokane near the town of Spangle, destroyed at least 10 homes and numerous other buildings Sunday, according to the Washington State Patrol.

A wildfire in central California that destroyed 47 structures and forced the closure of the famed Hearst Castle has chased more people from their homes.

The fire has burned 31 square miles and destroyed 48 structures since it began August 13.

The castle is expected to be closed Sunday as well, the official said.
