Virgin Trains are therefore disputing Corbyn’s claim that the train was “ram-packed”.

The video showed him sitting on the floor of a train traveling from London to Newcastle for a hustings, claiming that he was unwilling to spend taxpayers’ money on an upgrade to first class.

Aside from the unreserved seats, Virgin said there were some seats which had been reserved but not taken that passengers could have sat on.

However, there are some people sticking up for Corbyn.

The UK Labour leader appeared in an on-board video filmed by his staff in which he bemoaned the lack of seating on a Virgin Trains service from London to Newcastle and called for renationalisation of the railways.

The Independent has contacted Jeremy Corbyn’s campaign team for a response to Virgin Trains’ comments.

‘Today this train is completely ram-packed. All publicity may be good publicity and this will certainly attract a lot of media interest.

“There were also additional empty seats on the train (the 11am departure from King’s Cross) which appear from CCTV to have been reserved but not taken, so they were also available for other passengers to sit on”.

‘The reality is there are not enough trains, we need more of them and they’re also incredibly expensive.

Corbyn is now campaigning for re-election as Labour leader after a challenge was launched by former Shadow Cabinet Minister Owen Smith.

He said having to take part in a leadership contest “wasn’t what we wanted to be doing this summer” but said he was determined to fight to ensure the Labour Party moved forward.

Jeremy Corbyn was pictured standing next to a suspended Labour activist at an event last night.

Mr Corbyn said of the leadership battle: “We are doing it because we are absolutely determined that there will be no turning back to the days of a Labour Party, fighting election, promising cuts in public expenditure”.

The spokeswoman for Virgin, which has also been threatened with strike action by the RMT, said: ‘We know that some of our services on our east and west coast franchises are extremely popular, and it can be hard to find a seat.

Virgin trains said it has discussed fare regulation with the Government at various points over the last two decades and would like to work with MPs on reviewing fares for long distance journeys with the aim of reducing overcrowding.
