Sharks’ Logan Couture added to Team Canada roster

Couture will replace Jamie Benn (abdomen) on Team Canada’s roster for the World Cup of Hockey, NHL.com reports.

“We are excited to add Logan to Team Canada”.

Stars GM Jim Nill says Benn will be at 100 percent when the season starts, reiterating what he said after Benn had the surgery.

Evidently, Benn was not ready with Team Canada’s training camp set to begin in Ottawa in less than two weeks. Benn won an Olympic gold medal with Canada in Sochi in 2014.

The 27-year-old Couture had 36 points (15g, 21a) in 52 regular season games in 2015-16, before playing perhaps the best hockey of his career in the postseason as the Sharks advanced to their first-ever Stanley Cup Final. The World Cup will present the flawless opportunity for fantasy owners to get a sneak peek at Couture’s readiness for the upcoming season.

If not quite on Benn’s level, Couture provides head coach Mike Babcock with versatility, speed and skill. The forward finished as the team’s leading scorer with 10 goals and 30 points in 24 games.

He’s versatile enough to play in any role, be it as a checker who kills penalties or someone who lines up in more of an offensive capacity.
