Nick Franklin leaves game on Wednesday

San Diego Padres catcher Derek Norris reaches for the baseball after Tampa Bay Rays’ Matt Duffy tore the cover, on an infield single during the third inning of a baseball game Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, in St. Petersburg, Fla. As rough as the Rays’ season has been, manager Kevin Cash improved to 128-151 in his two seasons with Monday’s win, surpassing Joe Maddon’s win total in his first two seasons.

Snell (4-5) was in control with eight strikeouts, with the Padres’ only run coming on a bases-loaded walk to Alexei Ramirez in the fourth inning. Franklin scored on Miller’s two-run homer, but was taken out after the inning.

NOTES: Prior to Tuesday, 2B Logan Forsythe had five home runs in his last nine games.

“I pretty much single-handedly sucked the soul out of the team”, Jackson said. It was his fifth game since being activated from the disabled list with an injury to the same tendon.

Longoria holds the franchise mark in a number of offensive categories including homers, RBIs and extra-base hits. “I wish I could have given Tampa more of that, but it’s better to learn later than never”.

The Rays plan to discuss Wednesday the next step for RHP Chase Whitley, one of two pitchers nearing a return from Tommy John surgery. Alex Cobb is expected to complete his rehab assignment by the end of the month.

Padres: RHP Tyson Ross (right shoulder inflammation) will throw batting practice Tuesday. The Padres’ plan is to “get him back on the mound before the year’s out”, manager Andy Green said. Second baseman Logan Forsythe was scratched two hours before the game with back spasms. “We just didn’t play that well, didn’t come out with the intensity that we should have early in the game”.

The name of the on-deck circle is not meant to imply decking teammates, but something of that nature happened Wednesday with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Padres are 7-23 in their last 30 Tuesday games, 1-5 in their last six games on turf, and 2-5 in their last seven interleague road games while the Rays are 7-3 in their last 10 home games against a righty, 1-5 in their last six interleague home games, and 3-8 in Snell’s last 11 starts.
