Before exiting, Castillo smashed a two-run homer in the first inning, and he singled and scored during the third inning. Perhaps fatefully, Farrell suffered the hernia that led to the life-changing lymphoma discovery while throwing an equipment bag last week.

A day after learning manager John Farrell will miss the rest of the season to undergo cancer treatment, the Red Sox look to keep Felix Hernandez from becoming the majors’ first 15-game victor for the visiting Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

Lovullo is an emphatic 1-0. While we all want to see Farrell return to the Red Sox dugout, his priority now is on his health. Boston had two-run hits from Sandoval, Shaw and Holt in the inning.

Since being crowned champs, Farrell and the Red Sox have been unable to re-capture the magic. He is 19-for-56 (.339) with 11 RBIs in 16 games since being recalled from Triple-A.

Meanwhile, Red Sox righty Joe Kelly settled into a groove after surrendering a first-inning home run to Kyle Seager. “Obviously, some red flags came up”.

~ Mookie Betts made a terrific running catch in center field on a drive by Robinson Cano. In our situation, you’ve got 25 men in the room, and he’s got to put up with each one of us, every situation.

First baseman Travis Shaw also collected his second multi-hit and multi-home run game of the season while tallying three hits.

It was the second straight start where Montgomery struggled with command and execution.

Nobody expected Mike Montgomery to follow up Hisashi Iwakuma’s start with a no-hitter of his own.

Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell has been diagnosed with lymphoma and is stepping away from the team immediately. “Anything in front of him, you charge”.

Once the game got out of hand, the only item of interest for the Mariners was whether Nelson Cruz could extend his hitting streak. Since then: 0-3 in seven starts – the Mariners have lost all seven games – while allowing 29 earned runs and 45 hits in 32 2/3 innings.
