Tesla lays claim to world’s fastest production car
That’s about as fast as it takes you to even say “P100D”.

The new battery pack has been “quite a challenging development”, and “the manufacturing complexity is significantly greater”, than the less-energy dense battery packs, said Musk. The new battery also is available on the Model X SUV. Older P90D versions can be upgraded for the low, low price of $20,000.
Elon Musk described the new P100D pack as “complex” and that Tesla will first focus on the performance P100D version and the 100D will follow “several months” later. An all-electric 4-door sedan with a 0 to 60 miles per hour acceleration in 2.5 seconds and a SUV with a 0 to 60 miles per hour acceleration under 3 seconds.
That makes the Model S the third fastest production auto ever made, after the LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder, but is the quickest pure electric vehicle that has the capacity to seat up to five adults and two children, according to the company.
The Tesla Model S P90D with Ludicrous mode is now the quickest auto on the market thanks to a new battery upgrade, CEO Elon Musk announced on a call with journalists Tuesday.
It’s not all about speed, either.
The vehicle has a 100 kilowatt-hour battery pack that extends the car’s range to about 315 miles whereas the previous range was 294 miles. It’s not a huge difference, but it does push a standard EV over 300 miles for the first time.
The Model S will start at $134,500 and the Model X will start at $135,500.
Apart from the new battery, most everything has been left unchanged.
In short, it’s the same extremely fast Tesla as before, but now it will guaranteeably smoke anything you pull up next to at the lights. Unless your neighbour drives a million-dollar Ferrari, that is. “People who care about the Model 3, they should appreciate that people buying the P100D are helping pay for their car’s development”. Model X is also a pure electric SUV and can seat up to seven adults. Musk has said that by finding improvements and efficiencies in its manufacturing process, Tesla will be able to reduce costs that will benefit both consumers as well as its own bottom line. Existing P90D owners can also upgrade, at a larger cost.

The reason it’s more expensive for those who already have a Model S P90D Ludicrous is because the battery has to be recycled.
