The reigning World Champion was put through her paces by the ninth-seeded Indian, but ultimately prevailed 19-21, 21-12, 21-15.

“We thank all the staff especially the coach for giving us a silver medal to our country”.

Spain’s Carolina Marin screeched her way to Olympic gold Friday defeating India s P.V. Sindhu in three games to become the first non Asian victor of the women s singles badminton title. After PV Sindhu’s match, Gopichand was beaming like a proud father who wanted his ward to celebrate her win.

But despite all this heartbreak, Sindhu wasn’t despondent.

Sindhu, the talented shot-maker from Hyderabad, didn’t show any signs of nerve in the biggest match of her life as she made the country of 1.25 billion people proud with her grit and talent.

This moment of greatness surely deserves a medal greater than gold – platinum maybe.

Carolina Marin was crowned the badminton women’s singles champion after triumphing over PV Sindhu at the Riocentro on Friday.

Sindhu is a two-time bronze medallist in World Championships. I don’t know whether it is the same for others too. “We take pride in our daughter’s performance as we were aware that it was never going to be easy”, she said. Both of us really fought hard in the finals, but yes one should win and one would lose. “But I think she is a great athlete and has worked really hard to reach so far”, he added.

On Friday, Sindhu, who has assured India a silver medal, will go for a tough challenge and it will be interesting to see how Gopichand guides her to the gold medal.

“Overall, it’s not that I didn’t play well or get points”.

The Spaniard hit back in the second game with her superb shot-making skills. The Badminton Association of India and the Madhya Pradesh government also announced cash prizes of Rs 50 lakh each for Sindhu, while the All India Football Federation will give Sindhu and bronze medal-winning wrestler Sakshi Malik Rs 5 lakh each.
