The 21-year-old, who came close to carding a 59 round on Friday on his way to taking the midway lead, followed a third-round 64 with a three-under 67 on Sunday to finish five clear of nearest challenger Luke Donald.
Furyk shot the first 58 in tour history August 7 in the final round of the Travelers Championship.
Former tournament victor Brandt Snedeker finished at 65 and was six shots back in a tie for sixth with Billy Horschel (64), Hideki Matsuyama (68) of Japan and Graeme McDowell (64) of Northern Ireland. Kim played his opening nine in 6-under 29, and also birdied the par-4 second making another 10-footer. Ryder had a chance to force a playoff, but missed an 8-foot birdie try on the par-5 18th. Much like Kim, his tee shot on the final hole went into the rough to the left of the fairway. “But I’m in a good position and hope to enjoy playing”.
Joint first-round leader Rafa Cabrera-Bello, of Spain, shot 68 to slip three shots behind.
Davis Love III, the tournament victor previous year at age 51, is sidelined following hip surgery.
Tim Wilkinson didn’t do enough to move into the top 125 in the FedEx Cup standings.
Kim has served his US Tour apprenticeship, which started in 2013, and slowly but surely developed into a title contender. With the victory, he became the first player to win a tournament in the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s and 2010s.
Czech Masters: Paul Peterson Takes Down Pieters at the Czech Masters (read here): Having never previously recorded a finish better than a tie for 25th on tour, America’s Paul Peterson put together an excellent final round to cause an upset in Prague. The 38-year-old’s runner-up is his 15th in 308 career events (303 as a pro), and second this season, joining a T2 at the RBC Heritage, his ONLY other top 10 this season. Both players parred that hole and birdied No. 11 before Luck was able to reach the green in two on the par-5 12th.
