Singapore’s longest-serving president SR Nathan passes away

“The Prime Minister and his Cabinet colleagues are sad to learn of the passing of Mr S R Nathan and would like to convey their condolences to his family”, the statement read. As a mark of respect to the 92-year-old Nathan, the State flag on all government buildings will be flown at half-mast till August 26.

President of India Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the passing away of former President of Singapore S.R. Nathan.

Lee said Nathan was a warm and approachable President who endeared himself to Singaporeans.

Nathan, who rose to the topmost position, was of Indian origin.

Nathan was admitted to hospital in critical condition after suffering a stroke on 31 July. All Overseas Missions would also provide the condolence boards for overseas Singaporeans and friends.

Nathan’s body will lie in state at the Parliament House from around 10:00 AM on Thursday till Friday for the public to pay their last respects. He died last night at Singapore General Hospital.

The Prime Minister’s Office said arrangements for the public to pay respects and for the funeral would be announced later.

He was elected President unopposed in August 1999 with support from the nation’s founding father and first Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, and served two terms before leaving office in 2011.

On Friday (26 August), a State Funeral Service would be held at the University Cultural Centre (NUS).

Nathan will be accorded a state funeral on Friday, which will be followed by a private cremation ceremony.
