Walgreens integrates loyalty scheme with Android Pay

There are over 85 million active Balance Rewards members, and while not all of them will probably have a smartphone that’s compatible with Android Pay, those that do will be able to enjoy earning and using those loyalty points inside the store with just a tap of their phones.

Walgreens has announced that, starting today, Android Pay users will be able to add their Balance Rewards account to the Android Pay app. “We’re proud to have been the first retailer to integrate our loyalty program with the two leading mobile payment providers, and to give our customers another channel for greater access, choice and convenience”. If you’re a member of Balance Rewards, you can add your card to Android Pay right now. To complete the checkout, customers will then have to place their device again near the PIN Pad for the payment to be processed via Android Pay.

Android Pay has been around for almost a year, and Google’s mobile payment platform has seen greater adoption and success than the former Google Wallet ever had.

While some retailers would prefer you download their own mobile wallet app, Walgreens has been content to let its customers use options like Apple Pay and Android Pay. Well, if you use a standard Visa-branded credit card or consumer debit card, you can use it. Support will also be available for business debit card and Chase Liquid card users. Walgreens loyalty card integration means that its customers don’t miss out on the benefits even when paying with their mobile device.
