“So you have somebody who’s been in the country for 20 years, has done a great job, and everything else”, Trump said.

“There could certainly can be a softening because we’re not looking to hurt people”, Trump answered.

He said allowing illegal immigrants to jump the line and get on a path to status displaces those who did it the right way and are already waiting.

One of the mothers, who did not say her name, pointed to the need to deport undocumented immigrants, regardless of whether they are criminals – the very policy Trump appears to be rethinking.

Trump told Hanniy that victims of illegal immigrant crime have not died in vain. But he was vague on what to do with those who remain, saying that he plans to continue to do “the same thing” that the Obama administration has done, although “perhaps with a lot more energy”.

Conway also declined to provide details when asked about the “softening” by CNN’s Anderson Cooper Tuesday. “Build that wall! Build that wall!”

Over the course of his campaign for the White House, Trump has time and time again vowed to build a wall separating Mexico from the USA, adding Mexico will pay for the wall. “If you start going around trying to make new laws in this country it’s a process that’s brutal”. “We’re going to see where people are, we’re going to see how they’ve done”.

During the rally, Trump was joined on stage by mothers of children who were killed by illegal immigrants.

And aides said Tuesday that in the coming weeks Trump was planning trips to urban areas to conduct campaign stops he has largely avoided to this point, including stops at charter schools, small businesses and churches in black and Latino communities.
