Sudan says it has South Sudan’s former rebel leader who fled
The investigators will also assess the circumstances surrounding an attack on the compound popular with foreigners, the Terrain Hotel, and assess the United Nations response, Dujarric said.

South Sudan’s former rebel leader and vice president who fled the country last week has re-emerged in neighboring Sudan, which announced Tuesday that he had needed “urgent medical attention”.
Osman said the Sudanese authorities have informed South Sudan’s government with Machar’s presence in Sudan.
“Dr Riek Machar’s health is stable now and he will remain in the country under comprehensive healthcare until he leaves to a destination of his choice”, Osman told state media.
Machar fled South Sudan’s capital last month amid renewed fighting, just months after he returned to the country to resume being vice president under a peace deal signed previous year under worldwide pressure.
The incidents occurred during a spate of recent clashes between rival forces – the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) loyal to President Salva Kiir and the SPLA in Opposition backing First Vice-President Riek Machar – that broke out in and around Juba, on 7 July, close to the fifth anniversary of the country’s independence.
After Macher fled, Kiir quickly named a new vice president, Taban Deng, but Machar’s departure has further weakened a vulnerable peace agreement.
Sudan’s foreign ministry spokesman had told The Associated Press on Saturday that Machar was not there. He said Machar’s original plan was to travel to Addis Ababa, which has previously hosted South Sudan’s troubled peace process.
South Sudan’s presidential spokesman, Ateny Wek Ateny, said Tuesday that the government was not aware that Machar was in Sudan and had no comment.
He is now reported to be seeking medical assistance in Sudan after fleeing to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
He did not specify when Machar arrived in Khartoum, but said that when he arrived he was in need of “immediate medical treatment”.
Two years later, a brutal civil war erupted between supporters of newly-formed South Sudan’s President Kiir and Machar. Sudan is thought to have offered limited support to Machar’s side in the fighting, analysts say.

Ties between Khartoum and Juba have strained since then amid allegations that Sudan backs Machar in the civil war that has killed tens of thousands and forced more than two million from their homes.
