JFK Airport resumes service after reports of gunfire clear terminals

According to NBC News, JFK Airport’s Terminal 8 was evacuated following what were believed to be gunshots around 9:30 PM ET.

In addition to the Port Authority Police, the NYPD had its Hercules strike teams, critical response command, strategic response group, emergency service unit, and patrol cops on scene, NY law enforcement officials told CNN. Witnesses said they heard two shots fired.

Jamaican track star Usain Bolt won the 100-meter dash just after 9:30 p.m. for a record third time.

No gun casings were found after a search of Terminal 8, where reports of gunshots in the departures area prompted an evacuation, the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey said in a message on social network Twitter. A brief ground stop was imposed and then lifted.

Port Authority police said travellers should contact their carriers and warned of a “substantial PAPD and NYPD presence” at JFK and LaGuardia due to the investigation.

The Associated Press has obtained an internal brief from the New York Police Department which says patrons became “extremely disruptive” after watching the Olympics.

JFK’s Terminal 8 was evacuated while emergency crews inspected the scene.

Port Authority police say they have not found any firearms, rounds of ammunition, shell casings or other evidence of gunfire.

Police said they had not confirmed whether any shots were actually fired. A highway to the airport was also closed off.

Armed cops charge through the airport with their guns drawn during the terror scare, with the airport going into complete lockdown. Demetrius Pipkin was in Terminal 1 awaiting a Norwegian Airlines flight when he heard rumors that shots had been fired.
