Sri Lanka are now trailing 1-0 in the ODI series following their opening match defeat by three wickets against Steve Smith-led side.

Pradeep played in the first Test in the three-match series, which Sri Lanka won in a whitewash, before sustaining the injury. Pradeep had largely only played Tests until the likes of Lasith Malinga, Dushmantha Chameera and Dhammika Prasad were all ruled out.

In the first ODI against Australia, Sri Lanka fielded a playing XI consisting of as many as seven spin-bowling options and all-rounders Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera were the seam bowlers. With the ball turning square in the first match, it is unlikely that the hosts will look to field a specialist pacer in their bid to draw level in the series. In the four list matches against England Lions and Pakistan A, his scores were 35, 30 not out, 35 and 69. The Sri Lankan ODI squad will have to see him leave the team too and he will be replaced by the middle-order batsman Angelo Perera. He has also been a consistent performer over the last one year across formats in the domestic circuit.
