Powerful earthquake shakes central Myanmar

An natural disaster of 6.8 magnitude on Wednesday struck the central region of the Asian country, Myanmar formerly known as Burma, the US Geological Survey said.

Tremors were felt in West Bengal, Bihar, Assam and other north-eastern states. According to reports, offices, colleges and buildings were evacuated.

There were no immediate reports of any loss of life and property. In Bhubaneswar, people ran out to open spaces as the tremors lasted for several seconds.

Seismologists consider India’s mountainous northeast region as the sixth major earthquake-prone belt in the world.

The quake was felt several hundred kilometers (miles) away in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok. “A pagoda collapsed in Salay and a building also collapsed”, Soe Win, a regional MP from the township in Magway region, said, adding that he has not yet heard of any casualties.

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said, shaking buildings across the country and the region. Deep earthquakes generally cause less surface damage.
