Drugs disappearing from drop-off boxes has led to the indictment of Sandusky County Sheriff Kyle Overmyer.
The county’s six police chiefs grew concerned previous year when Overmyer would not explain what he did with the drugs he gathered from drop boxes at police stations.
According to DeWine, the charges also allege that Overmyer deceived pharmacists and physicians in order to obtain prescription medication.
Overmyer is expected to be arraigned tomorrow, August 24th, before Visiting Judge Patricia A. Cosgrove.
It was not immediately known if he had an attorney who could comment on the charges.
He’s also accused of improperly using the sheriff’s Furtherance of Justice account, writing at least two check to himself for a total of $2,500.
A northern OH sheriff is expected to be in court on charges that include illegally obtaining prescription drugs and misusing department funds.
Overmyer’s complaint against O’Connell was referred to county Prosecutor Tom Stierwalt to determine whether criminal charges should be filed against O’Connell.
The Delaware County Prosecutor Carol Hamilton O’Brien is serving as special prosecutor in the case. The chiefs requested Ohio BCI to investigate the sheriff for possible wrongdoing.
Overmyer did not answer a call from the News-Messenger Tuesday, and his phone did not accept voice mails. Sheriff Overmyer responded then that the investigation was political in nature.
Overmyer, who is running for re-election in November, has served as sheriff since his appointment in 2008 after the death of former Sheriff David Gangwer, becoming the youngest sheriff in OH at age 34.

Overmyer earned his peace officer’s certificate in 1995 from Terra State Community College before receiving his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Tiffin University in 2003.
