After running into some trouble early on the back nine – three bogeys on his first five holes – cutting his lead to three, Kim birdied two of his last four holes, including the hard par-4 18th.

“I felt I played good for the majority of the round, just the putts didn’t want to drop in”, said Cabrera Bello, fifth last week at the Olympics. Only problem have pressure.

Kim had never won on Tour, coming close at the Barbasol Championship following a play-off defeat to Aaron Baddeley in July.

Kim made bogey on No 10 as rain moved in. It also is the next-to-last chance to earn points for the Ryder Cup, which begins September 30.

Former tournament victor Brandt Snedeker finished at 65 and was six shots back in a tie for sixth with Billy Horschel (64), Hideki Matsuyama (68) of Japan and Graeme McDowell (64) of Northern Ireland. “I came here for a couple of reasons this week”.
