Bloomsbury is in the process of publishing gorgeous, illustrated new editions of the Harry Potter books, but you may not know that illustrations played an important part in the first edition as well.

It seems there’s no end to the Harry Potter universe, as author J.K. Rowling continues to add stories to the series and unearth previously unanswered questions. The sketches have been floating around online for awhile now, but many people hadn’t seen them until they resurfaced online recently.
According to the caption, that sketch is of “Chap 7”.
Fans may be familiar with some of Rowling’s other sketches, such as this picture of Dean Thomas alongside Harry, Ron, Hermione and Neville, on their way to Harry’s first-year duel with Draco Malfoy.
It’s been awhile since we read that part of the Philospher’s Stone, but we’re pretty sure there was no mention of anyone called Gary. As it turns out, Gary’s name was changed to Dean – so he’s Harry’s classmate, Dean Thomas.
Remember in the book (or the film if you’re one of those) when Snape asks Harry the following tricky question to catch him out in his first potions lesson: “Tell me, what would I get if I added powdered root of asphodel to an infusion of wormwood?”.
Just when you think you know everything there is to know about Harry Potter, the fandom delve deeper and reveal new information that shocks us all over again.

In what was clearly her only little trip down memory lane, after Twitter users started tweeting at Rowling about this mysterious ~Gary~, Rowling herself admitted that she had completely forgotten about Gary, in what was clearly just a slip of an Obliviate! charm.
