Six University of Notre Dame football players were arrested in IN overnight, five on suspicion of marijuana possession and the sixth after an altercation at a local bar, officials and local media reported on Saturday.
Police found marijuana and a handgun during the traffic stop of the five Notre Dame players, according to Indiana State Police. St. Joseph County prosecutor Kenneth P. Cotter is asking the court for additional time to investigate and determine whether formal charges should be brought against Butler.
Notre Dame senior cornerback Devin Butler was charged with two felonies on Tuesday stemming from the incident in which he was arrested early Saturday morning.
The other four players involved in this weekends arrests – Te’von Coney, Kevin Stepherson, Dexter Williams and Ashton White – will face internal discipline.
Kelly warned that the players’ standing with the team is still volatile, pending any further penalties from the justice system and the university.
Butler, who was arrested after he allegedly tackled and punched a police officer, was charged with battery against a public safety official and for resisting law enforcement, according to multiple reports, including the Associated Press.
All five were released Saturday afternoon from the Fulton County Jail in Rochester, where they had been held on a misdemeanor marijuana possession charge. According to police, Butler was asked to move back and the player “shouted profanities at the officers and starting swinging his fist”. Police said that while Butler was being taken to jail he apologized, saying he had “been incredibly emotional and intoxicated”, the affidavit says.
Losing two senior players in the backfield is something that will definitely hurt the team, but it was clear-cut that the disciplinary actions had to be taken. Officers observed Butler forcibly shove the woman by her head and body, causing her to move 3 to 4 feet.
A two-year starter for the Irish, Redfield was fourth on the team in tackles last season.
Butler broke his left foot in June and wasn’t expected to return until October at the earliest. Redfield, Williams and Stepherson were also charged with possession of a gun without a license.
