Van Gaal wants United’s best player De Gea to stay

De Gea’s absence means that Van Gaal will likely hand a first start to Argentinian shot stopper Sergio Romero who United signed from Sampdoria in the summer.

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea’s protracted move to Real Madrid won’t happen during the current transfer window.

De Gea, 24, missed Saturday’s win over Tottenham because manager Louis van Gaal thinks his concentration has been affected by interest from Real Madrid.

“It’s sad that it has dragged into the season“.

But former Old Trafford no1 Schmeichel believes Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris is the ideal keeper to takeover from De Gea.

With the window due to close on September 1, it is unlikely that such a scenario will come to fruition with United apparently as determined to keep De Gea as Madrid are on extending Ramos’s stay at the Bernabeu.

As United qualified for the Champions League with a fourth place finish in the Premier League, Young played a key role, starting the club’s final 13 games of the campaign.

Netherlands winger Memphis Depay was brought in from PSV Eindhoven, for whom he was top-scorer as the club won last season’s Dutch title, but the 21-year-old may take time to settle in as United’s new No. 7.

“We have three (right-sided) centre backs”, van Gaal said, “we have Smalling, Jones and McNair but if he is much better than them then it is possible”.

“He might not like the decision, but it’s not the biggest hardship in the world to have to play for Manchester United for another year”.

When asked if De Gea could ever play for the club again, Van Gaal had no hesitation in telling reporters: “Of course”.

“I think he doesn’t trust him 100 per cent and I wouldn’t like a goalkeeper like that at Manchester United“.

The 24-year-old has one year left on his contract and has refused to sign a new deal.

“We’re waiting on different situations and have to see how it pans out”.

“We created chances, especially in the first 20 minutes, and if we play like that every game we’ll win a lot of matches”.
