Notre Dame Football Players Can’t Stay Out of Trouble
Notre Dame has dismissed senior safety Max Redfield and placed senior cornerback Devin Butler on indefinite suspension in the wake of their respective arrests this weekend.

The same for the other two players who were in the auto.
An officer ordered Butler to stay back, but he cursed at the officers and approached them.
South Bend police arrested Butler, who was then booked at St. Joseph County Jail on preliminary charges.
Notre Dame cornerback Devin Butler has indeed been charged with a pair of felonies. Police approached the woman to arrest her for battery when Butler shoved the woman, according to the affidavit.
Police said that while Butler was being taken to jail he apologized, saying he had “been incredibly emotional and intoxicated”, the affidavit says. At Notre Dame, where we place so much importance on the integration of students who are athletes into the broader university, the primary responsibility for discipline lies, as it should, with the University’s Office of Community Standards.
Kelly last week praised Redfield’s progress from five-star recruit to up-and-down player to what he expected to be a big-time contributor this season.
Redfield played 36 games for the Irish, started 23 times and finished with 144 tackles and two interceptions. Butler had been recovering from a foot injury and was trying to earn a starting spot.
When the officer who intiated the traffic stop approached the vehicle he smelled the odor of marijuana emanating from the auto, a police dog was then utilized to conduct a “free air sniff” around the vehicle, which indicated the presence of illegal narcotics. The trooper detected the odor of marijuana and with the help of a drug-sniffing dog, he found the marijuana and handgun, police said.
Butler’s arrest came just hours after five of his Notre Dame teammates were arrested in Fulton County for marijuana possession. All five players face misdemeanor possession of marijuana charges while Redfield, Stepherson and Williams face an additional misdemeanor charge of possession of a handgun without a license.
It was not immediately clear if any of the six players had attorneys who could comment on their behalf. He previously had said any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university.
