Terrified beachgoers ran from the water in Cape Cod after a shark attacked a seal about 20 yards offshore, turning waves dark red and prompting the beach’s closure.

The shark chose an idyllic Eastham beach on Massachusetts’ Cape Cod for its stunt.
Chris Randall, a senior lifeguard, said: ‘One of the other lifeguards gave me the signal for a shark, at which point I scanned back and saw an explosion of water and blood.
Authorities didn’t identify the shark species involved in the incident, but the culprit was likely a great white shark. Paige Long, a dispatcher with the Cape Cod National Seashore, says that’s standard protocol.

Researchers said there have been more than a dozen great white shark sightings at the Cape earlier this month. Swimmers are being advised to stay in shallow water, avoid swimming at dawn or dusk, keep in large groups, and stay way from tasty seals.
