Thursday marks 100 years since President Woodrow Wilson signed the National Park Service Organic Act.

But it says it has more work to do to ensure that the national parks and other sites in its care are preserved and protected for generations to come. The anniversary comes during a time of increased popularity for the park.

Created by eco-advocacy group Environment America, the current initiative hopes to convince the President to make that ban permanent by turning 1.7 million acres of public land around the park into the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument. Performers Emmylou Harris, John Prine and Theodore Roosevelt re-enactor, Joe Wiegand, also will take part. “We’re revitalizing a grove of giant Sequoias in Yosemite; repairing the Lincoln Memorial; and enhancing the iconic entrance to our first national park at Yellowstone”.

There will also be a 15 percent discount on all book and gift sales to visitors in both of Saguaro National Park’s visitor centers, east and west of the city. Some roads and trails may close on short notice.
