Founder and CEO of Tesla Motors Elon Musk Tuesday unveiled the new four-door sedan Tesla Model S P100D with an improved 100 kilowatt-per-hour battery that also makes it the longest range electric vehicle.
The battery is available in both the Model S and Model X, an SUV, that can now accelerate to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds, according to the company, making it the fastest SUV in the world.
Tesla noted that buyers of its P90D Model S with Ludicrous mode can also upgrade their vehicles by adding the new battery for an additional charge of US$10,000, if the auto has not yet been delivered to them.
The new Model S starts at $134,500 while the cheapest of its competitors, Porsche 918 Spyder starts at $845,000. Previously, the Model S P90D was able to hit 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds, but move over, pokey, because the P100D gets there in 2.5 seconds.
Model S and Model X are engineered to be the safest cars on the road and to have the highest ratings from NHTSA.
In fact, the Model S variant, the P100D with Ludicrous mode, the company says, is the fastest mass production vehicle ever built – able to go from 0-60 in 2 and-a-half seconds.
Tesla claims the P100D can do up to 380 miles on a single charge, as rated officially on the NEDC scale. This new model turns up the wick with an even more powerful electric powertrain, slashing that already astonishing time.
The new Tesla battery pack is about going long distances, and about driving faster than any auto that has been mass produced has gone before. And every Tesla will improve over time with free over the air upgrades.
But wait: if you’ve ordered a P90D model and haven’t taken delivery, you can upgrade to the P100D for just $10,000!

“While the P100D Ludicrous is obviously an expensive vehicle, we want to emphasize that every sale helps pay for the smaller and much more affordable Tesla Model 3 that is in development”, the company said in a statement.
