Despite the love that fans have for Cumberbatch, filming “Hamlet” during his performance is a big no-no and won’t allow the actor to do what he does best.
Benedict Cumberbatch is now starring as Hamlet in a production at the Barbican Theatre in London, according to Buzzfeed.
She wrote: “Benedict Cumberbatch has all the energy Hamlet requires, sweating around the Barbican stage like an oleaginous electric eel, but there’s little subtlety in this performance”.
Said the actor, “I can see red lights in the auditorium”.
Cumberbatch becomes the latest actor (see: Patti LuPone, Kevin Spacey, Matthew Broderick, Frances McDormand, Brian Dennehy) to plead with or scold audiences in an attempt to get people to stop using phones and cameras during performances. Also in July an audience member jumped on stage before a performance of Broadway’s Hand to God to attempt to charge his phone in the set’s (fake) outlet.
“I can’t give you what I want to give you, which is a live performance that you’ll remember, hopefully in your minds and brains whether it’s good, bad or indifferent, rather than on your phones”, explained the 39-year-old. I’d really appreciate it if you could tweet, blog, hashtag the s– out of this one for me. “So pay attention, this isn’t me blaming you, that is simply me asking you to only ripple it on the market, within the brilliantly helpful means that you simply do, with the humorous, digital issues”. While there have been previews of the event, Cumberbatch had a stern, but charismatic request of patrons planning on whipping out their smartphones during the performance. His speech began with, “I don’t do social media”.

Interest in Cumberbatch’s Hamlet may be particularly high as the production, which runs until October 31, has completely sold out.
