A search warrant was being executed at 15 Destiny Ct.by federal agents when the man started a fire.

The man, who was identified as Garland Tyree, 38, was found dead inside his home in the Mariners Harbor neighborhood in northwest Staten Island around 12:30 p.m., according to the report. Police also fired shots, though it wasn’t immediately clear if Tyree killed himself or was felled by police bullets, the officials said.

According to Tyree’s Facebook page, he founded Real Write Publishing in 2012 to bring “realistic urban fiction” to the public from street-smart authors.

“Why could anyone think it’s OK for him to be at a gym working out for two hours in the middle of the day and he is supposed to be running the city”, said “a former top official who worked closely with two mayors”.

Emergency correspondents, such as uniformed police officers and SWAT crews, are still on the scene.

Hostage negotiators and New York City’s police commissioner were called to the scene. But instead of exiting peacefully, Tyree fired shots from inside the apartment at department vehicles, and then exited while continuing to fire shots from a fully automatic AK-47, Mr. Bratton said.

Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce informed reporters that Tyree was a gangbanger with ties to the Bloods.

Garland Tyree died in a standoff with police Friday.

In total, he was arrested 18 times and convicted in 2004 on federal gun charges for which he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, officials said. The shooting happened around 6 a.m.

A fire department spokesman says the firefighter was shot while responding to a blaze at the 2-story private dwelling.

Authorities entered the apartment early Friday morning to find it filled with smoke, Bratton said.

But Sergeants Benevolent Association President Ed Mullins said de Blasio should not have been fiddling around in Brooklyn while a building in Staten Island was burning and a maniac was shooting at police officers. Mr. Garland has been on probation since July 2014.
