According to a press release from the MDE, ACT research has also shown that taking certain specific courses in high school substantially increases students’ readiness for college level work as well as their readiness for workforce training programs.

State education officials expected Nevada’s ACT scores to reach new lows for the class of 2016. North Dakota is of the 20 states that funded ACT testing for all public school students in the 2016 graduating class.
Less than one-tenth of 1 percent of students who take the college entrance exam achieves a 36, the highest score possible.
More than a third of the students – 34 percent – failed to meet the benchmarks in any of the four subjects, an increase from 31 percent the year before.
With these facts updated and refreshed in your mind, we’re ready to look at more from the 2016 ACT report in future blogs.
The goal is to “align students’ experiences in high school with being ready for college and career”, Canavero said. In 2016, Georgia students outperformed 26 other states and tied with one. “The average scores went down substantially in those seven states, which brought down the national average”. That’s double the national average of 5 percent. This represents lost opportunities for low-income students.
The number of MS students tested rose by 6,000 to 36,000.
While some Wisconsin students have taken the ACT test for many years, this was the first year that all public high school juniors took the exam. The national ACT science score for students who took the same sequence is 23.
Looking ahead, Cassellius said that she hopes to see more underrepresented students take advantage of fee waivers to retake the test to improve their scores. While 60 percent of Asian American students and 49 percent of white students showed strong readiness for college coursework, meeting three or more of the ACT benchmarks, just 23 percent of Hispanic students and only 11 percent of African American students earned that same level of achievement. Beginning with the graduating class of 2013, all students whose scores are college reportable, both standard and extended time tests, are now included in the reports.
The reason for Van Deven’s excitement is understandable when you realize that 129 SoBoCo students took the test – 52 more students than the 77 who took the test in 2015.

In recent years, Minnesota has seen between 74-78 percent of 12th grade students taking the exam, and the students left behind were often the same students caught in the state’s persistent achievement gap. “While there is room for improvement, we are encouraged by the consistent growth in the right direction”.
