This summer, a legal challenge by the City of Toronto to ban the Uber service failed, but a bylaw proposed in Waterloo Region to handle it looks set to move ahead.

The highways department has handed down 243 fines totalling Tw$32.75 million (US$1 million) since September, when penalties on Uber first started for operating without proper registration. Uber was asked to comment on the complaint but the company had not issued a response by press time.
These attacks have been continual, and have forced many Uber drivers to go off the roads and stay offline.

The company is asking Hongkongers to support it on social media using the hashtag #supportuberhk, in a strategy similar to the one it employed successfully in New York after Mayor Bill de Blasio tried to limit its growth.

The city says that ruling, however, has no impact on UberX drivers and their private vehicles.
