A not-guilty plea was entered Wednesday on behalf of Notre Dame senior cornerback Devin Butler, who is charged with resisting law enforcement and battering a police officer.
Butler will be arraigned Wednesday at 1 p.m. ET. Court records don’t indicate he has hired an attorney.
Butler was arrested Saturday hours after Indiana State Police arrested five teammates about 40 miles south of South Bend on misdemeanor marijuana and gun charges in a separate incident. Indiana State Police said a trooper stopped a auto for speeding and detected the odor of marijuana and with the help of a drug-sniffing dog, he found the marijuana and a handgun in the vehicle. Kelly, who had suspended Butler indefinitely on Sunday, said any resolution with the player’s status will be expedited given the current circumstances.
Kelly dismissed from the team starting free safety Max Redfield and subjected Kevin Stepherson, Dexter Williams, Ashton White and Te’von Coney to internal discipline for an incident in Fulton County allegedly involving marijuana and an unlicensed handgun.
Notre Damecoach Brian Kelly said the four players he disciplined internally in light of weekend arrests are now practicing with the football team, but that their playing status is now in the university’s hands.
All six remain enrolled in school.
A university spokesman has said “any student arrested on a felony charge also faces dismissal from the university”. “The University will determine if the additional sanctions should apply to any or all of the students charged”. Butler was arrested early Saturday morning outside the Linebacker Lounge, a popular bar near Notre Dame’s campus, after an altercation with two police officers in which he also allegedly shoved a woman.

Butler cursed at the officers and caused injuries to Knepper before Butler was subdued with a Taser, the affidavit said. As officers tried to detain Butler, he pushed one officer and then tackled him and began striking him and pulled off his duty belt, the affidavit says.
