Soldado set to leave Spurs for Villarreal

Roberto Soldado’s exit from English football is nearly complete, as his soon-to-be former club Tottenham have confirmed that an agreement is in place with Liga BBVA outfit Villarreal.

The above visualisation demonstrates how Soldado compares to other strikers signed by Premier League clubs since 1992, showing how forwards fared in their first season at a new club and how much they cost.

He becomes Villarreal’s third high-profile signing of the summer after the double capture of Samuel Castillejo and Samuel Garcia from Malaga. “I’m very happy with the way we are”.

Asked whether that would really give Spurs enough options in their front line, given how many forwards Liverpool have, as an example, the head coach said: “You never know”.

Despite heartening performances from both sides in the opening weekend of the season, Tottenham and Stoke finished the opening round of fixtures having suffered demoralising defeats.

Of all the new-look Premier League teams last week, few were more impressive than West Ham.

Pochettino was nonetheless asked whether he expects Harry Kane to be at White Hart Lane when the transfer closes, and he said: “Of course, he is a big part of my plan, Harry Kane“.

“We all want to put on a performance and get the three points to make it a special day for everyone”, he told his club’s official website. “We had two great performances against Spurs last season, beating them twice, so we’d love to replicate that again“.

Following last week’s below-par draw with Swansea, expect Mourinho to be at his most pragmatic, with 90 minutes of bus-parking potentially ensuing. They also had a player sent off in both games (Vlad Chiriches and Kyle Naughton).

Lloris has previously stoked speculation by expressing his desire to play in the Champions League, but Pochettino says the France captain wants to fulfil this ambition with Tottenham.
