Doctor Strange calls in Dan Harmon for script polishing

It gave everyone reason to pause, since Doctor Strange was supposed to have wrapped filming a while back, given the film is due out in November. There’s no word as to what types of scenes Harmon is writing, but we’d bet we’ll get that information once the movie comes out.

Now we have confirmation that new scenes for Doctor Strange were recently completed, and the scenes in question were actually last minute additions written by Community and Rick and Morty creator Dan Harmon.

Should you recognize that name, this is about the time when you ask, “Wait, Community Dan Harmon?”. The creator of the sitcom Community received the call to work on new pages following the wrapping of principal photography. He also co-created the excellent Cartoon Network series Rick and Morty.

So what’s a writer mostly known for comedies doing on a superhero flick?

It’s not clear if Dan Harmon will be credited alongside writers Scott Derrickson (who is also directing) and C. Robert Cargill (Sinister), who also get story credit alongside Prometheus writer Jon Spaihts.

With a whole new magic system and mythology to introduce, that makes sense. Doctor Strange, meanwhile, arrives in cinemas from October 28. The scenes were apparently added as part of some recent reshoots and “additional photography” (a common practice), and with Harmon at the keyboard, we’d imagine they might be adding a bit of lightness and humor to the mix. Moreover, he brings a different perspective to the script, given his comedy chops.

An image tweeted by one of the film’s writers, Daley Pearson, from the film’s Brisbane set yesterday hints at a cameo by Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch. It stars Benedict Cumberbatch, Tilda Swinton, Rachel McAdams, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and more.
