‘Destructive tornado’ in central in topples Starbucks

The National Weather Service has stated the preliminary rating was an EF-3 in Kokomo and an EF-1 east of Crawfordsville.
Pence said that the first warnings of severe weather in IN were sounded at about 2:40 p.m. ET and that eight tornadoes were confirmed – at least three of which touched down.

“It’s insane. It’s a madhouse”, Mitchell Carlson, a maintenance technician at the Park Place Apartments in Kokomo, told the Associated Press. He said the complex has 16 buildings and “probably eight of them don’t have a roof” after the storm.
He says “it’s a madhouse”, but that there haven’t been any reported injuries.
But no one was injured at the apartments, he said, adding: “So, I guess we’re all blessed at the Park Place”. He also estimated that 20 to 30 vehicles had been damaged by falling tree limbs and air conditioners.
Storms rolling through Indianapolis left more than 11,000 Indianapolis Power & Light customers in the dark as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Indiana State Police said after storms, people will self-deploy and go to damaged areas to help but they ask that you refrain from doing so.
Officials said no one is allowed on the roads except emergency crews.
Kokomo Mayor Greg Goodnight said the storm caused “pretty severe property damage” and downed many trees.
The Starbucks was located at Markland Mall, WTHR reports.

Indiana University Kokomo has canceled classes for Thursday due to loss of power. Indianapolis public education officials delayed sending school children home on buses for almost two hours, waiting until the weather cleared before dismissing the students, the school district said.
