Conte perplexed by Costa criticism

Chelsea came from a goal down at Watford on Saturday to make it two wins from two Premier League games for Conte, with Diego Costa scoring an 87th-minute victor.

The Blues were heading for a shock defeat until Michy Batshuayi came off the bench to equalise and Cesc Fabregas produced a superb assist for Diego Costa’s victor.

The Spaniard was also a substitute in the win against West Ham on Monday and Conte hinted that he is still looking for his preferred central midfield duo with Nemanja Matic and N’Golo Kante now getting the nod.

“So I want him to put himself in the game, not to think of other situations”.

Batshuayi came on and scored the equaliser after Conte had switched to a 4-2-4 system, which saw the Belgian play up front with Costa, flanked by Eden Hazard and Victor Moses.

“I feel good because I saw the right commitment, the right spirit from my team”, he told BBC Sport. The manager must choose the starting XI and then find a solution during the game. After a bad season like past year, it’s not easy to start by winning lots of games and starting in a good way. But I’m pleased because this has happened.

Etienne Capoue gave the Hornets a shock lead before sub Batshuayi and Diego Costa struck to earn all three points. “We can still improve a lot, but we must continue to work like that”.

Walter Mazzarri is still waiting for his first win after a 1-1 draw at Southampton on the opening day was followed up with this galling defeat. We were not focused on both of those plays.

Mazzarri added: “Of course we will shake hands”. Both the goals, as you can see, were our mistakes.

“But in Italy we d say that we complicated our own lives”.

Watford had marginally more opportunities, with Odion Ighalo wasting the best of them when he spooned the ball over the bar from close range following a powerful run down the right wing by Nordin Amrabat. “We are a team that still has room to grow and there is margin for improvement”.
