Along with wrestler Sakshi Malik, who won a bronze on August 18, Sindhu is so far one of the only medalists in this year’s Indian Olympic contingent, the largest the country has ever sent to the games.
Sindhu thus became the fourth Indian to win a silver at the Olympics after shooters Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (2004, Athens) and Vijay Kumar (2012, London) and wrestler Sushil Kumar (2012, London).
When it boils down to matters of discipline, Pullela Gopichand has no peers with PV Sindhu learning it the hard way since her formative years at the legendary coach’s academy.
Spain’s Carolina Marin screeched her way to Olympic gold Friday defeating India s P.V. Sindhu in three games to become the first non Asian victor of the women s singles badminton title.
Carolina Marin was crowned the badminton women’s singles champion after triumphing over PV Sindhu at the Riocentro on Friday.
“It is a monumental achievement for Sindhu, she has always dreamt of winning an Olympic medal”. Coach Gopichand commented that “the most striking feature in Sindhu’s game is her attitude and the never-say-die spirit”.
The daughter of former volleyball players, Sindhu took to badminton at the age of eight-and-half.
Sindhu said she could stay focused in all the matches only because she was able to shut herself out from everything. However, I was prepared because I knew it would happen. It’s always there. I didn’t get really annoyed. She lost to a player who I thought played better today. “How to shout, scream at the opponent”, he added.
Carolina too became the first Women to bag Gold for her country in Badminton singles.
“I understand things will be different, very different from now on. She is a real champion and I am proud of her”.
