The designer of the burkini said she has seen an increase in sales since several French towns banned women from wearing the Islamic swimwear.

The 34-year-old mother cautioned in Cannes, who gave her name as Siam, said she had gone to the beach with her children.

She was given a ticket, which, according to the French news agency AFP, cited she was not wearing “an outfit respecting good morals and secularism”.

“Beachwear which ostentatiously displays religious affiliation, when France and places of worship are now the target of terrorist attacks”, reads Cannes’ ordinance, “is liable to create risks of disrupting public order”.

Human Rights League has appealed the bans in a case that will come before the country’s highest administrative court on Thursday.

Ten Muslim women have been apprehended by police in Cannes for wearing a burkini since the ban was introduced three weeks ago.

Women who are apprehended by police while wearing a burkini can be fined €38 in some towns. She’s been fined the equivalent of about $16, though the Toronto Star reports she plans to fight the fine.

Marwan Muhammad, president of the Collective Against Islamophobia in France, told CNN, out of the 15 women they are helping, none were wearing burkinis – only headscarves.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has dismissed the idea of a burkini ban in Canada, for he believes his country is inclusive to everyone’s rights. “I was stunned”, she said.

“There were some people that were supporting us, but there were other people who applauded the police officers and began insulting us and we were shocked”.

Islamic dress has always been a subject of debate in France, which was the first European country to ban the Islamic face veil in public in 2010, six years after outlawing the headscarf and other conspicuous religious symbols in state schools.

One of the most recent occurred in late July, where more than 80 people were killed while celebrating Bastille Day in the city of Nice.
