Mets’ deGrom allows 3 HRs in 8-1 loss to Cardinals

Randal Grichuk’s solo homer in the fourth extended the Cardinals’ lead to 3-1, but deGrom escaped a jam later in the inning when Matt Carpenter lined into a double play. “He’s always been down in the zone and has movement”.

Just when the Mets desperately needed him the most, Jacob deGrom faltered in his second straight start Wednesday night.

Alejandro DeAza, who came in to run for Bruce and stayed in to play center field, scored on Asdrubal Cabrera’s double.

“I wasn’t able to keep the ball down; I wasn’t able to get ahead in counts”, Garcia said.

“It’s fun to watch them put up crooked numbers in any inning, even against a quality pitcher like deGrom”, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. He allowed 12 hits and five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

“His calf knotted up when he was actually jogging out to right field in the first inning”, Collins said.

“I’m not sure where we’re going to find all the pitching for all these rests”, Collins said. Piscotty and Yadier Molina had three and every player except Carpenter raised his season batting average.

Then again, deGrom was supposed to be involved in a pitcher’s duel in his last outing and that didn’t pan out.

Cardinals: IF Aledmys Diaz (right thumb fracture) took ground balls for the first time since being placed on the DL on August 1 and INF Matt Adams (right shoulder inflammation) expects to go on a rehab assignment this week. Jedd Gyorko and Brandon Moss singled in succession with two outs before Piscotty hit a bouncer that backed up Jose Reyes at third base. “When you throw up 19 hits and get (RBIs) from six different guys, that’s a great overall effort”.

Martinez, winning his second straight and running his record to 12-7, has given up only two runs and seven hits over his last 15 innings.

Over his last two starts, deGrom has surrendered 13 runs on 25 hits, including four home runs, in 9 2/3 innings. “We need a shut down right there and those two runs (in the second) that takes a lot of wind out of your sails”.

Making an unexpected major league debut, Robert Gsellman picked up a win the New York Mets needed badly. Since being recalled from Triple-A Memphis on August 11, Grichuk is batting.289 in 38 at-bats with four homers, the fourth coming in the sixth inning Tuesday night.

The Mets announced Wednesday that Jon Niese will undergo surgery to fix a torn meniscus in his left knee, and it seems unlikely that he’ll return by the end of the season. The biggest culprit lately has been deGrom, in a rotation that is awaiting Steven Matz’s return from shoulder tightness.
