Oakland Raiders file to trademark ‘Las Vegas Raiders’

Despite Davis’ interest, the San Francisco Chronicle (h/t Youmans) reported in June that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was exploring options to block the move to Las Vegas and keep the Raiders in Oakland.

The trademark application covers various classifications, including “arranging and conducting athletic competitions, namely, professional football games and exhibitions;” “production of radio and television programs” and “providing sports and entertainment information” via a variety of mediums.

The Oakland Raiders filed for three trademarks to the phrase “Las Vegas Raiders” this week, perhaps the next step in a move from Oakland to Sin City.

Filing an application doesn’t mean the team is moving, at least not immediately. Those individuals – who all filed their trademarks on January 29 and January 30 when owner Mark Davis began his flirtation with moving to the city – will likely then have to make the case that their filing is unrelated to the team.

Las Vegas, which was recently awarded an National Hockey League expansion team, is looking into building a domed football stadium which would help lure the Raiders.

The Raiders have just one year remaining on their lease at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum.
