Red Sox place Andrew Benintendi on DL with knee sprain

In the seventh inning, Benintendi, 22, had ventured too far off second base when Dustin Pedroia hit a chopper up the middle with Tampa Bay’s infield drawn in.

Immediately after the tag, Benintendi appeared to catch his foot in the dirt and roll his ankle.

Boston Red Sox outfielder Andrew Benintendi will receive an MRI on his left leg on Thursday.

Benintendi suffered the injury while attempting to get back to second base on what ultimately went down as a ground-ball double play.

The 22-year-old rookie was hitting.324 in 21 games since his call-up from Double-A Portland on August 2. Benintendi is batting.324 with a homer and 10 RBI since debuting in the major leagues in August.

Benintendi had to be helped off the field after his ankle rolled significantly and his knee bent in an awkward direction (video link), though Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald tweets that his ankle is “fine”. Chris Young will become the everyday left fielder, with Brock Holt seeing time there as well. In addition, Farrell said that Benintendi does not have much swelling in the knee and that the team is hoping that his season has not come to an end.
