Tillakaratne Dilshan to retire after Australia series

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews produced an all-round performance as the hosts recorded a comprehensive 82-run victory over Australia in the second one-day worldwide to level the five-match series 1-1 in Colombo on Wednesday.

Dilshan top-scored in the 2009 World T20, where Sri Lanka made the final, before going on to become the second-highest run-scorer overall in T20 internationals – playing in two more World T20 finals, one of which his team won.

Mendis, who followed up his 67 in the first ODI with a run-a-ball 69, hit nine boundaries and forced Australian skipper Steve Smith to use seven bowlers until the 21st over.

Following Sri Lanka’s whitewash of Australia in the Test series, the visitors are looking to salvage their tour of the sub-continent during the one day internationals.

“We respect our former captains and former greats who have an opinion”, Lehmann said.

Sri Lanka lost 5-27 as their innings ended abruptly, but the damage had always been done with Kusal Mendis top-scoring after posting a run-a-ball 69 for his second successive 50.

Australian captain Steve Smith, who is returning home to rest and will miss three one-day internationals and the Twenty20 series, said the concept could be looked at for Australia’s Test series in India in February.

“Peter is the incumbent wicket-keeper in the T20 side and had a very good World T20 for Australia”, selector Marsh said.

Can Sri Lanka rebound after dropping the first ODI match, to even the series. Not too many people are able to do that – you take a bit of time and settle in and take a look at the wicket. “I thought we could have got 300 plus”.

It lost two wickets in two balls after Mitchell Starc struck early to send Danushka Gunathilaka back to the pavilion. A little while later, Chandimal was trapped on the pads by Adam Zampa (3-42) in the 25th over.

The third match will be played in Dambulla on Sunday.
