Clinton has reportedly told FBI investigators that her use of the private server was inspired by former Secretary of State Colin Powell, who has pushed back against the suggestion, saying, “Her people have been trying to pin it on me”.

He also defended Hillary Clinton’s contact with donors to the foundation while serving as secretary of state, saying foundation donors like Bangladeshi economist and Nobel Peace Prize victor Muhammad Yunus have no trouble reaching officials around the world.

At the moment, Clinton would win at least 268 votes in the Electoral College, the body that ultimately chooses the next president, just two shy of what she needs to win the White House, Reuters reported, citing the finding of its States of the Nation project undertaken jointly with Ipsos.

But it could be a whole new ballgame if a special prosecutor is assigned to investigate. “Those are the only ones she cares about”.

Traveling in California, the Democratic nominee has kept out of the public eye for days, spending most of her time wooing celebrities, financial titans and technology moguls at private fundraisers. State Department officials have said they are unaware of any agency actions influenced by the foundation. Combined, the contributions total as much as $156 million.

Pushing back, Clinton said of the AP report, “I know there’s a lot of smoke and there’s no fire”.

“It draws a conclusion and makes a suggestion that my meetings with people like the late, great Elie Wiesel or Melinda Gates or the Nobel Prize victor Muhammad Yunus were somehow due to connections with the foundation instead of their status as highly respected global leaders”, Clinton continued. “That is absurd”, she said.

Bill Clinton said changes at the foundation are needed if Hillary Clinton becomes president that weren’t necessary when she led the State Department.

Clinton has no immediate plans – in an interview or a news conference – to explain the FBI’s discovery of another batch of emails or personally clarify how her administration would wall off the organization founded by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, if she’s elected president. “And there are no excuses”.

Clinton is not expected to discuss the issue during a Thursday speech in Reno, Nevada, which will be focused on attacking Trump to the so-called “alt right” movement within the Republican Party that has strayed from mainstream conservatism.
