Jon Stewart to visit Wilmore on ‘Nightly Show’ finale

Jon Stewart, who introduced the world to Senior Black Correspondent Wilmore came out as the host delivered his final open to “The Nightly Show” on Comedy Central. In fact, it represented exactly what people loved and hated about that format choice, with voices tumbling over one another and making points that only landed halfway.

“A very wise man said to me, ‘Do not confuse cancellation with failure, ‘” Stewart said. He also gave a shoutout to Comedy Central and Jon Stewart for supporting him for nearly two years and giving him the opportunity to run a show.

While this year’s second quarter found “The Daily Show” beaten only by NBC’s “The Tonight Show” in adults 18-to-34, logging 278,000 viewers, “The Nightly Show” retained little more than half that audience, according to Nielsen.

One of Larry Wilmore’s most celebrated on-air ex-colleagues is set to be part of the comedian’s last show. What you don’t realize is that you walk out of this room, and that conversation doesn’t end. I know NBC is under affiliate pressure to sign off so newscasts can start but I wish it had waited a few more minutes and interviewed Walsh and Ross. He then remembered the times his shows (pre-Daily Show) were cancelled, including the time a Paramount executive “told me to get my shit and get out”, Stewart said. It’s also likely the best gift Wilmore received all week, right in front of the wine from Samantha Bee, the booze from Stephen Colbert, and the pastries Trevor Noah made a decision to send over from The Daily Show. The host has been posting pictures to Instagram this week of all the farewell gifts he has been given, primarily booze, from his former Daily Show cohorts. “And what you don’t realize is that you walk out of this room, and that conversation doesn’t end.And that’s a attractive thing”. So I will say this to you: What you, my friend, were tasked to do – you have done – and done beautifully. If you’re floating in space, the Earth could take on any orientation.

“We’re just gonna begin development and see where we go”, he said. But as a culture we all agree with the opinion that the world should be seen in a certain way. “But I just want to show I really appreciated the show and being on”. As he put it on Monday’s installment: “Our show was at its best when the news was at its worst”. When people say “Let’s take our country back”, my way of saying that is, “Yes, you want to unblacken the White House”.

It seems appropriate to echo that sentiment now. There can be a number of reasons why we didn’t get the numbers.
