“There is no epidemic, there is no outbreak of Zika on Miami Beach, there are two unconfirmed cases, the county says and the health department says, but they have not been confirmed for Miami Beach”, Levine said. One of the cases involves a person who was exposed in the one-square-mile area of Miami-Dade County the state believes is responsible for local transmission of the virus.

The news release continues- during the last week, Florida announced 14 cases believed to be contracted from local mosquitoes in a small area of north Miami.

Glen Ridge has issued a warning for residents who may be traveling to Florida, especially to the Miami area, due to the presence of the Zika virus.

He said it is important to alert people as soon as possible if local transmission is occurring so that pregnant women can protect themselves and get tested for the virus. The first case involved a 50-year-old man who had recently traveled to the Caribbean. Zika virus has also been linked to malformations of the fetus in pregnant women.

The first case of Zika has been reported in Clark County.

Additional infections outside Wynwood and Miami Beach also are being investigated.

Zero infections have resulted from mosquitoes in New York City.

The Port Authority spokeswoman said the agency works with both state health departments as well as the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Texas health officials linked the case to Miami after examining dates of travel and the onset of symptoms. So far, no mosquitoes have been found locally with the Zika virus. More than 48% of all visitors stayed in Miami Beach.

“We have not been told by Health Department officials about Zika cases in Miami Beach as of 7:30 p.m. ET”, Melissa Berthier, Public Relations Manager at the Miami Beach mayor’s office told CNN Thursday evening.
