In Miami, where two neighborhoods have been put on Zika alert – the north Miami neighborhood of Wynwood and a section of Miami Beach – the number of locally-acquired Zika cases is now at 42, according to Tuesday’s Tampa Bay Times. Clinton said the fund would specifically equip health officials at federal agencies like the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), as well as state and local departments.
Prior research has shown the Zika virus attacks neural progenitor cells – a type of stem cell that develops into different types of nerve or brain cells. Zika poses a danger of severe birth defects for children of infected women.
